Whether you choose to volunteer your time for a local organization, lend a helping hand online, or engage in other meaningful acts, this post offers insightful suggestions on how to make a difference all year round.

In What Ways Can You Give Back?

There are many ways to give back to your local community. Here are a handful of simple and meaningful ways to do so!

1. Donate Food and Clothes to a Local Shelter

Donating is a familiar concept, but many items can be donated that people may not be aware of. Apart from food, which can be donated to shelters and kitchens, you can also donate toiletries, cleaning supplies, linens, toys, clothing in good condition, as well as coats and warm clothing during the winter season. If you are looking for donation sites, find a local organization near you through a simple Google Search.

2. Join a Community Garden

Food insecurity is a significant problem affecting all areas of the country, including Chicago. Community gardens are a way to help with food insecurity by providing residents of certain areas with access to healthy and organic food. To locate a community garden near you, begin by checking with your local park district. The Chicago Park District has a dedicated web page for community gardens registered with the city. Another good source to find community gardens is through apps and social media platforms such as Facebook and Nextdoor typically have community postings that can make it easier to locate community gardens.

3. Support Local Businesses in Underserved Communities

This is less about donating to charity and more about building a strong community. Many neighborhoods in Chicago face economic disadvantages and receive less investment compared to others, in particular, these neighborhoods are the South and West Sides of Chicago. While the city of Chicago has ongoing efforts, it’s important to understand that businesses located in these areas often have to put in extra effort to attract customers and promote their products. When deciding on where to shop, consider exploring options outside of your usual neighborhood and try visiting a different area that has similar product offerings.

4. Coach or Mentor

Mentoring or coaching someone who is younger than you can be an incredibly fulfilling experience. Whether you are offering guidance to someone in their professional life or taking on a coaching role with a community sports league, the opportunities to make a positive impact are limitless. Providing support and guidance to someone who is just starting out in their journey can be a great way to share your knowledge and experience, and help shape the future success of the next generation. Some organizations that I am familiar with in Chicago are C.H.A.M.P.S, Chicago Scholars, and Polished Pebbles. These are only a few—to find more check out VolunteerMatch.com

5. Participate in a Charity Walk/Run

Charitable runs and walks provide an opportunity to contribute to a good cause while engaging in physical activity. They offer a chance to connect with others who share a passion for making a positive impact in the community. Some popular charity walks/runs in Chicago include ‘Chicago’s Race Against Gun Violence’, ‘The Bank of America Chicago Marathon’, and ‘PAWS Chicago 5K.’ By participating, you not only improve your own health and well-being but also help make a difference in the lives of others.

6. Distribute Food at a Food Pantry

Spend a few hours of your time volunteering at a local food pantry where you can take part in the process of sorting through boxes of food items, picking out the best items, and preparing them for distribution to individuals and families in need. This can be a truly fulfilling way of giving back to your community and helping those who are less fortunate.

7. Buy Produce and Goods from Local Farmers

Explore the abundance of fresh produce, handcrafted goods, and locally sourced items at your neighborhood farmer’s market. By choosing to buy from local markets, you can help sustain the livelihoods of small-scale farmers and promote a healthier and more sustainable food system for your community. Chicago has plenty of farmer’s markets to choose from—we’ve located many of them here.

8. Volunteer with a Local Animal Shelter

Pet shelters are always in need of extra items including food, new or gently used toys, leashes, collars, food bowls, and more. Additionally, many shelters accept donations of gently used towels and blankets. In addition to items, shelters also need volunteers to spend time playing with animals and walking dogs. Your time and donations can make a big difference in the lives of shelter animals.

9. Give Your Time to an Arts or Culture Organization

Supporting the arts and cultural organizations in Chicago is a great way to give back. There are many museums, cultural institutions, art foundations, and more that are constantly looking for volunteers to help their mission. Organizations like the Simple Good and Chicago Art Urban Retreat are great places to start. You can also volunteer with Chicago’s popular museums.

10. Participate in Local Elections

Your participation in local elections can have a direct impact on your day-to-day life. Take some time to research the candidates and get involved in the process by casting your vote. Your voice matters, so make it heard!

11. Spend with Older Residents at a Nursing Home

Many nursing homes organize various activities for their residents, such as game and crafting sessions, where volunteers can offer their assistance. Alternatively, you can consider volunteering to spend time and socialize with the residents. You might be surprised to know that many of them have no family members or visitors, and they would highly appreciate even an hour of your company

12. Perform a Random Act of Kindness

Spread positivity by engaging in a random act of kindness. It could be as simple as holding the door for someone, offering a genuine compliment, or surprising a friend with a thoughtful gesture. These small acts can create a ripple of goodwill, making the world a brighter place, one kind deed at a time.

13. Participate in a Fundraising Event

Get involved in a meaningful fundraising initiative. Fundraising stands as a significant pillar, accounting for 36% of the top four national volunteer activities in the U.S. You can contribute by volunteering your time, organizing an exciting event, showing up to support, or making a generous monetary donation. I attend fundraising events at least once a year and always have a good time supporting local organizations that are trying to make a difference in the community. They are not only great for supporting the organization but networking with others as well.

14. Donate Blood

Donating blood is a selfless act that can save lives. By giving a part of yourself, you contribute to the well-being of others in a profound and tangible way. Your blood donation could be the lifeline for someone in need, whether they’re undergoing medical treatment, facing surgery, or recovering from an accident. It’s a simple yet powerful gesture that embodies compassion and community support—you never know whose life you might positively impact with this generous act.

15. Pick Up Trash Around Your Neighborhood

By dedicating some of your time to picking up litter in your neighborhood, you’re actively contributing to the well-being and aesthetics of your community. It’s a simple yet powerful way to make a positive impact, as cleaner surroundings not only enhance the overall appearance but also create a healthier and more pleasant environment for everyone. It’s a small gesture that can lead to a big difference, promoting a sense of unity and demonstrating the importance of individual actions in building a better, more sustainable community.

Final Thoughts on Contributing to Your Community

When I first moved to Chicago, I found myself giving back primarily through my time as a volunteer. These volunteer opportunities in Chicago aligned with my strengths, and passions, and where I felt I could make the most impact. Throughout my time as I volunteer, I learned a few great tips that will be helpful to anyone looking to give back to their community:

  1. Begin anywhere: There are national directories for giving like and in Chicago, you can reference sources like One Good Deed or Chicago Cares to help you find volunteer opportunities.
  2.  Start small: You don’t have to donate all of your money or time to give back to others. Starting small with gestures around your neighborhood like picking up trash or giving your time once a month makes a huge difference
  3. Try different opportunities: When looking for ways to give back, try out different opportunities that suit you best. If you like animals, consider helping out at the shelter, but won’t it be the only opportunity that you try? Try to look into other ways to give back outside of your comfort zone. You never know, you might actually like something that you never thought you would!
  4. Ask your company to match: Many companies offer matches for monetary donations that their employees make, volunteer days for individuals, and company-sponsored volunteer days. Take advantage of the benefits from your company and support your favorite organizations at the same time.

Now that you know a few different ways to give back, which ones will you look to implement into your life?
