26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade
September 13, 2026 (12–3 p.m.) | Little Village
Celebrate Mexican Independence Day at the 55th edition of the annual 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade in Chicago’s Little Village. One of the largest parades in the Midwest, the celebration fills the 26th Street corridor with colorful floats, lively mariachi bands, folkloric dance performances, local businesses, entertainers, and community organizations. The parade travels approximately two and a half miles from the Little Village Arch at 26th Street and Albany Avenue to Kostner Avenue.
MOVE at The Shed

MOVE at The Shed is a community-based wellness festival where you can build your own day around movement, fitness, and connection. Choose from experiences including Pilates, boxing, dance, yoga, Tai Ji Qi Gong, strength training, and more. A complimentary Community Pass also provides access to free programming including group runs, walks, line dancing, mobility training, community rides, and a closing conversation with Keke Palmer.

On select Sundays, enjoy this free event in Chicago. The Maxwell Street Market will open and include an eclectic mix of foods and finds. If Emmett Till Lived: Freedom on American Ground Opening Convening
What: Join the Museum of Contemporary Photography for a special opening convening celebrating If Emmett Till Lived: Freedom on American Ground, a major exhibition curated by Dr. Sarah Elizabeth Lewis and Reverend Wheeler Parker Jr. The program brings together artists, historians, cultural leaders, and other guests to explore Emmett Till’s life, legacy, and the life he might have lived. The convening will be followed by a public opening reception at the Museum of Contemporary Photography.

What: Explore the humble sticker as an art form at Stick Together, an exhibition presented by You Are Beautiful and the Design Museum of Chicago. Uptown Rhythm Festival
What: Dance, connect, and explore climate-conscious art and culture at the Uptown Rhythm Festival. What’s Funny Comedy Festival: Lil Rel Howery Live Taping

Ascend Beyond: Featuring DJ Chava + Everywhere Between
What: Celebrate 50 years of Rincon Family Services at Ascend Beyond, an evening of live music, art, community, and impact at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. Ciderfest 2026
What: Celebrate the arrival of fall at this one-night cider tasting featuring local, regional, and national cider brands. Tickets include cider tastings and a commemorative tasting glass, with food available for purchase. This is a 21+ event, and dogs are welcome.

Chicago Humanities: Pilsen Day
What: Spend the day exploring Pilsen through art, music, culture, and neighborhood programming from Chicago Humanities. Highlights include public art and architecture walking tours, conversations with artists and authors, photography programs, and cultural events at the National Museum of Mexican Art. The lineup includes programs with Ramón Hernández, Merrick Morton, Emily St. John Mandel, Marlon James, and Ruben Molina, plus a free DJ set and interactive art installation.

Randolph Street Market Festival
What: Spend the weekend treasure hunting at one of Chicago’s best-loved vintage markets. Randolph Street Market brings together hundreds of vendors selling antiques, vintage décor, fashion and jewelry, vinyl, art, global goods, and more. The West Loop market also features live music, artist activations, market bars, food, and plenty of people-watching. Modern Vintage Chicago will also pop up with a rotating selection of luxury vintage fashion and accessories.

If you’re planning a Chicago trip in September, you’ll get a little bit of everything: summer energy, early fall weather, major cultural events, and plenty of opportunities to explore the city’s neighborhoods.

What should I wear in Chicago in September?
Think transitional layers.
Bring lightweight clothing for warmer afternoons, along with a sweater, jacket, or other layer for cooler mornings and evenings. Comfortable walking shoes are a must if you’re planning to explore festivals, neighborhoods, museums, or the Chicago Riverwalk.
If you’re visiting later in the month, pack a few warmer layers because temperatures can change quickly.
What to Look Forward to in September
September is when Chicago starts to feel a little different.
It’s one of the best times of year to explore a neighborhood you’ve been meaning to visit, catch a new theater production, spend an afternoon at a museum, or stumble onto a festival you didn’t know was happening.
In my opinion, if you’re visiting Chicago in September, don’t feel like you have to pack every major attraction into your itinerary. Pick a few things that genuinely interest you, leave room to wander, and see where the city takes you.
