All You Need to Know: A First-Timer’s Guide To Art Basel Miami 2023

If you’re planning your first trip to Art Basel Miami, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! I recently attended the event for four days and had an amazing time. As someone who had always wanted to attend this major art event, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to fully immerse myself in it. In this guide, I’ll share my tips on how to make the most of your experience in a fun and affordable way, while also enjoying all that Miami has to offer.

With this guide for first-timers to Art Basel, you’ll have no trouble discovering the best things to see, do, and enjoy in Miami during the biggest event of the year.

What is Art Basel and is it part of Art Week Miami

Art Basel is a massive arts event where top galleries from around the world present works by modern and contemporary art masters and emerging artists. Art Basel corresponds with Miami Art Week, where Miami and Miami Beach are the collective center of the art world and host over 20 art fairs, over 1,200 galleries, and thousands of artists and art lovers. This week is a whirlwind of events that includes a broad range of satellite art fairs, exhibits at local museums and galleries, as well as A-list parties.

What to see at Art Basel and Miami Art Week

Art Basel runs from December 8-10. Day tickets start at $75, and there are various VIP tickets available. There are tons of things to see in Art Basel Miami and its surroundings. The main fair of Art Basel comprises five sections varying from leading galleries to ones that are solely dedicated to emerging artists. This fair is hard to get through in one day, so give yourself plenty of time to get around as you’ll need a few hours to explore.

In addition to the actual fair, it’s crucial to check out satellite art shows and art activities. My favorite ones include Untitled Art. on the sands of South Beach, which will feature over 100 international contemporary galleries, and Aqua Art, the premier location for art aficionados to gather, discover, and procure works by young, emerging, and mid-career artists.

Even beyond the fairs, Miami Art Week offers public art installations and exhibitions in the area. Here are some upcoming events that you’ll enjoy:

  • Miami Design District: A shopping district that is a hub of fashion, art, and culture in Miami. During Art Basel, they will host cutting-edge events with iconic brands and pop-up installations. A must-see while there is Making Miami” and LVMH Culture House.
  • No Vacancy 2023: Hotels along Miami Beach host ‘No Vacancy 2023’, a temporary public art project featuring 12 local artists creating site-specific works at 12 iconic hotels.
  • The Gateway: South Beach’s web3 movement is celebrated with an immersive digital art experience.
  • LOUD WEEK by Love of Urban Design: Spanning through the city of Miami, LOUD WEEK spotlights Black artists and fashion designers through exhibits, panels, and a grand finale to close out the week.

Where to stay

Finding accommodation during Art Basel in Miami is relatively easy, but it’s important to book in advance. If you plan to stay at a vacation rental, be cautious of scams. Despite booking my trip in advance using VRBO, I faced major issues while checking into my housing. This was a learning experience for me, and I want to ensure others can avoid such situations. During Art Basel Miami, I recommend booking a hotel room. You can find some great options using a

What to wear

Miami is an incredibly vibrant city, so it’s essential to pack colorful clothing, a swimsuit, and comfortable shoes for all the walking you’ll be doing. While there is no specific dress code for Art Basel, I highly recommend dressing fashionably casually to make a statement. This means wearing your best walking shoes and comfortable yet stylish clothes.

It’s important to note that for many of the fairs, you may be restricted to bags no larger than 16″ x 8″ x 16″. Backpacks, suitcases, or trolleys are not allowed, so it’s crucial to check the website of each fair for their specific restrictions to avoid any inconvenience.

How do you get around?

Getting around Miami during Art Basel can be done in several ways. The most convenient option is to book lodging near the fair and walk to your destination. Alternatively, you can use rideshare services during non-peak hours. Miami has a reliable public transportation system that includes buses and trains. If you’re staying in the Miami Beach area, you can use the city’s free trolley service, which has four loops. Biking and car rental services are also readily available in the area.

Where to dine, party, and enjoy free events

There are plenty of cheap and free things to do during Art Basel. Here is a quick hit list of where to go and who is hosting parties, free things to do, and places to eat during

If you’re looking for a unique and exciting experience, I highly recommend visiting Miami during Art Basel and Art Week. You’ll have the opportunity to discover and collect art from all over the world, connect with other art enthusiasts, and maybe even spot a celebrity or two. Plus, with Miami’s great weather, delicious food, and lively atmosphere, you’re sure to have a fantastic time. I can’t wait to go back and experience it all again!

Thanks for the helpful information! I’ve never been to Art Basel nor have I ever kicked it out in Miami. A Fashion influencer that I follow took her teenage son with her this year in 2023 & I think it would be a great trip to do with my teenage son in 2024. 😊
