Weekend Seekers Guide: May 10th – 13th

This weekend, reuse, recycle, and repurpose costumes from local theater productions, with the Chicago Green Theatre Alliance. Fill up on some of the city’s best shrimp at Lawrence Fish & Shrimp annual eating contest. Check out some of Chicago’s most well-known African-American artists, all under one roof at Connect Gallery. 4th Annual CGTA E-Waste/Textile Drive and Costume Exchange

The Chicago Green Theatre Alliance will host the 4th Annual E-Waste/Textile Drive and Costume Exchange event. Missed last weekend’s fashion show at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago? No fear, UNIQLO on Michigan Avenue has you covered. Now through June 30th the fashion-forward store will feature installations and showcase the work of photography and designs from seven fashion design students from the school. 5th Annual Incarcerated Mother’s Day Vigil and Toiletry Drive

Join Moms United Against Violence and Incarceration and other local organizations for the 5th Annual Mother’s Day Vigil and Toiletry Drive. The event, held outside of Cook County Jail, uplifts and honors mothers who are separated from their children due to incarceration, deportation,  electronic monitoring and even parole. During the event formerly and recently incarcerated moms, their loved ones, and abolitionist organizers/artists will share their stories of perseverance and support. Attendees will release balloons and greet loved ones on their way to and from visits. If you are unable to attend the event but wish to still support, contact Moms United Chicago for more information on how you can get involved in showing love and support to these mothers during the exceptional holiday.

Beyond Black Panther: Celebrating Sci-Fi in Books & Comic Books

In conjunction with Manifest, a May Guide featured arts and culture event hosted by Columbia College Chicago’s, the Museum of Contemporary Photography(MoCP) will host an interactive celebration of science fiction in books and comic books. Stop by to explore In Their Own Form, an exhibit of curated books and comics, listen to Afrofuturist beats, and make interdisciplinary connections between Afrofuturism in contemporary photography, literature, and illustration.
