Looking for ways to celebrate Black History Month? Visit the historic Bronzeville neighborhood spotting historic homes like that of Ida B. Wells.

Located on 3624 S. Martin Luther King Drive in Chicago. Ida Bell Wells-Barnett (July 16, 1862 – March 25, 1931) lived in Chicago in this late-19th-century Romanesque Revival style stone residence while fighting to end lynching, segregation and the economic oppression of African Americans. She and her husband bought the building in 1919 and lived there until 1929.

Wells was an American investigative journalist, educator, and early leader in the civil rights movement.Having settled in Chicago, Wells continued her anti-lynching work while becoming more focused on the civil rights of African Americans, including being one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

On the southern end of the park is a long-abandoned zoo, now a nature preserve full of wild peacocks, crocodiles, and other wildlife.
.
The Crandon Park Zoo Ruins transports you back in time with a visit to this off-the-beaten-path portion of the park. Now inhabited by crocodiles(I saw a few myself) roaming peacocks, the Crandon Park Zoo Ruins is a bit of a sanctuary to the once 1,200 animals that lived in and around the perimeter of the park long ago.
