For this How To Wear It, I picked decided to share how I would wear one of the season’s most popular trends, the statement tee. I wanted to bring the look full circle on the blog since earlier this year I covered it in my previous trend report. It’s one of those clothing items that can be worn year after year, day in and day out that will always remain symbolic and somehow, entirely necessary.
The Look
My statement t-shirt was an excellent find that I picked up at the Renegade Craft Market from the booth of local design house Suki and Solaine. The t-shirt is pretty eye-catching. A vagina, in the shape of a snake, featuring other symbolic references, above is the phrase “Don’t Tread On Me.” Here is a quick history lesson on why this t-shirt is so amazing.
The slogan “Don’t Tread On Me” is historically associated with the Gadsden flag, the OG American flag during the Revolutionary War that symbolized strength, liberty, and even rebellion. Some people may cite it as being racially discriminatory, I personally, don’t see it that way. The t-shirt makes a statement about being sharp and ready for any and everything as a woman, that’s why the vagina being present and the central piece of the shirt is so important. As a woman, I can literally give life, create movements, build relationships, and curate a whole entire culture so that it represents and elevates my people. I can do any and everything. The whole phrase in itself, “Don’t Tread On Me,” meaning don’t walk on me is so relevant right now. Don’t ignore, step, move, crush, underfoot or trample me. As a woman, as a black person, as an American, as a human being, I am not going for it. It’s CLEARLY, written all over my face.
How To Wear It:
I paired my statement tee shirt with high-waisted culottes by Madewell and a classic pair of Converse sneakers. I added some vintage jewels and big hoop earrings to make a subtle statement as well. Finally, it is the season for transitional weather, so I layered the look with a lab coat from Topshop to stay warm for the expected temperature change to the easy-breezy all-day-ready ensemble.
So how should you wear this HTWITW piece? T-shirts are classic for a reason. Wear them with pretty much anything! For a conversation ready-casual date, pair the t-shirt with sexy black jeans or even a pleated skirt. Extended that casualness of the look by pairing the t-shirt with colorful overalls and a bootie or bright block heel. Wear it to work underneath a navy pants suits to make a very compelling office statement. Very, very convincing.
